Samos, Greece - EU's strategy on migration dramatically exacerbates the situation for migrants.

Despite EU promises of change, and 5 years into an EU Turkey deal that has dramatically exacerbated the situation for migrants, the EU is normalizing and intensifying its same strategy on migration. New camps are being constructed on the islands. These are more securitized and isolated – in other words, open-air prisons that are strategically less visible.

Today around 900 asylum seekers and refugees live in the centre of Samos, which is designed for 648 people. Men, women and children live in horrendous conditions among rubbish and rats, with no access to adequate toilets, showers and shelters. When people arrive and there is no space for them inside the reception centre, they buy materials by themselves, such as wood pallets, plastic sheets etc. and build makeshift shelters.

The brand new centre, located 5km away from Vathy city in Samos island, is still partly under construction, but most of it is ready. Located in the middle of nowhere and surrounded by three layers of fence & barded wire, it is designed to host up to 3,000 people, of which according to the Greek Minister of Migration, 2,100 will have a “controlled access” and 900 will be in detention waiting to be sent back to Turkey. Patients and people who live in Vathy reception centre describe it as an open-air prison.
