After the fire that destroyed Moria two weeks ago, the EU have vowed that there will be no more “Morias” – but this is clearly totally untrue, a new tent camp is set up in Lesvos and a new one is waiting to be used in Samos. Across the Greek islands, there are many other camps with the same cruel containment policies that keep people trapped in terrible conditions, and in Vathy camp the conditions are particularly awful.

What’s worse is there are now over 50 positive cases of COVID19 in Vathy camp, and amid the COVID-19 pandemic the elderly and people with chronic and complex medical conditions are still forced to live in tents and containers in horrific, unhygienic and unsafe conditions. The response from the authorities with regard to a medical response in the camp is lackluster at best, and negligently dangerous at worst. Those who have been tested positive are being isolated in bad conditions without medical treatment. Meanwhile, there is no medical strategy in place to tackle the possible outbreak across the camp, which could spread like wildfire due to the unhygienic and cramped conditions.
