So we've come here today to visit this new prison-like camp that's being constructed for the refugees who are currently in Samos. And this is the new approach to migration in Europe, where we are seeking to criminalize, to humiliate and to punish the refugees and asylum seekers rather than to extend their rights.
The conditions currently are not good at all. But this is not an improvement to say that we're going to move behind many layers of barbed wire, to have children playing here in this playground that is like a prison. This is from one prison to another. And this is not the type of reception that one would expect from European countries. It's time for E.U. leaders, it's time for citizens to see what's happening with their tax payer money and to instead of investing in this kind of criminalization to invest in a caring, dignified approach to asylum seekers and refugees arriving in Europe.

Living in the camp is a misery. There is no life here especially for the youths. It is below zero. They have no life here. They don’t have any rights in the camp.
Some persons reached the point of harming themselves because of all these problems. It means there are no feelings left.

Despite promises of change, the EU is normalizing and intensifying
its same strategy on migration.

New camps are being constructed on the islands.
These are more securitized and isolated.

ON-SCREEN TEXT :

In other words: open-air prisons that are strategically less visible.

You would move from one prison to another prison. In this place, we can’t make it; so how it would be if you go to a closed camp!
How would your life be if you have a family, and you are in a different place than your family. And it has been two years and you didn’t get any rights ?
How would you accept such thing ?

Doctors Without Borders again calls on European countries to completely change their containment and criminalization processes. We ask them instead to provide dignity and care, and treat people with respect.
