Riverographies of Baudó: a visual journey through the wounds of the conflict in Colombia

Since 2022, MSF has been developing a decentralized model to improve access to health services in remote Indigenous and Afro-descendant communities in the municipality of Alto Baudó, in the Chocó department of the Colombian Pacific.

Colombian photographer Fernanda Pineda designed and led a photography project documenting the effects of the armed conflict and the healing practices of communities in this region. The project transcends traditional photojournalism to showcase the resilience and healing of communities through a co-creative process with local women and traditional healers while also highlighting the essential work MSF has done in these vulnerable regions.

The project covers 3 different communities within the Alto Baudó municipality, and spaces that were especially affected by violence in each community, with participants from the communities symbolically healing photos of these spaces using local herbs and materials to represent the link between violence, healthcare and healing, and the role of local practices in healing and community life.
