A year after the opening of the Salama Clinic in Bunia

Since June 2023, Médecins Sans Frontières has been supporting a trauma centre at the Centre Hospitalier Salama in the town of Bunia, the capital of Ituri province, in order to offer appropriate, free care to people affected by the violence. This project has been boosted by the cyclical and recurrent inter-community violence, marked by its unpredictable intensity, which has forced more than 1.6 million people - a third of the total population of Ituri province - to flee their homes. These clashes are generally accompanied by acts of unprecedented violence to which civilians fall victim: gunshot wounds, stab wounds, cutting off of hands, arms or feet - all acts that bear witness to the unpredictable intensity of the violence.

The nature of these types of injuries requires a high level of surgical expertise, and due to the lack of adequate medical infrastructure to manage the influx of patients suffering from complex physical trauma, MSF launched a comprehensive medical project to provide essential access to surgical care for victims of the recurring cycles of violence affecting the region.

One year on, the teams performed 2,050 operations at the Salama Trauma Centre.
