2022 has been a difficult year for rural communities in the department of Chocó. There, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), 131,765 people in 12 municipalities of the department face difficulties in moving freely and accessing food, education and health. Clashes between armed groups, as well as the installation of anti-personnel mines, have affected Afro and indigenous communities that are increasingly confined in smaller spaces. In medical referrals, the most common cases that MSF attends to are moderate or severe dehydration, diarrhea, malaria and malnutrition. These conditions are exacerbated by the situation of confinement in which more than 1,815 people live due to the dispute between two armed groups. Over the course of the year, the communities have encountered food and supply difficulties, as well as mental health problems due to the clashes and confinement. Between May 20 and November 23, 2022, MSF teams made 322 medical referrals of patients without access to health care in remote villages of Alto Baudó who do not have the means to travel by river to primary health care points - journeys that can take between two and 12 hours. During this time, there have been 10 deaths of children under 5 years of age due to different causes, such as asphyxia, whooping cough, diarrhea, dehydration and vomiting.
