According to the latest UNHCR report, more than 1.5 million Venezuelans have settled in Peru and more than 532,000 have applied for refugee status. This makes it the number one host country for Venezuelans in need of international protection and the second largest destination for Venezuelan refugees and migrants worldwide. Tumbes, a small town on the border of Peru, is one of the main entry points into the country and one of the busiest in South America. MSF teams, who provide general medical, sexual and reproductive health and mental health care there, witness the conditions in which people arrive: exhausted and dehydrated, some have suffered violence - including sexual violence - and robbery by armed groups. In addition, once they arrive and stay in the country for a while, migrants continue to live in precarious and unhygienic conditions, exposed to various health problems.
