Zummar Maternity - March 2018

In Zummar, north-west of Mosul, Médecins Sans Frontières / Doctors Without Borders (MSF) runs a maternity clinic, an emergency room and a paediatric inpatient department in Tal Maraq hospital. The team offers sexual and reproductive healthcare, and referrals for complicated cases.
After the Kurdish referendum in September and the subsequent governance changes in that region, communities previously cut off from medical care suddenly had access to MSF’s Zummar clinic. This resulted in a sharp increase in the number of people seeking help, and the team conducted a total of 10,600 sexual and reproductive health consultations and assisted 2,881 deliveries.

When MSF started its activities in Tal Maraq, there were no free functioning health posts in the area. A few months before, the area was controlled by the Islamic State (IS) group, and parts of the area had been severely damaged in the conflict.
Fortunately, the health clinic was not affected by the conflict and MSF started the activities with sexual and reproductive health, a daily emergency for women. A few months before, the area was controlled by IS group, and parts of the city of Mosul as well as Tal Afar were still under their authority.
The maternity clinic has three delivery beds for non-complicated deliveries. Women with complications can be referred with ambulances (24/7 service) to another MSF facility in west Mosul (Nablus), where c-sections are available.
MSF staff provide special care for the newborns, with a warm room and special attention for babies with low birth weight or infections.
The facility also provides emergency care with four stabilization beds. Around 30 to 40 people come every day for consultations, some of them with acute and life threatening conditions such as respiratory distress due to infections, strokes, cardiac failures or car or domestic accidents.
