Responding to the consequences of the climate crisis and providing care for people with NTDs in Nampula

Mozambique is one of the countries most sensitive to the effects of climate crisis. Every year, cyclones become more frequent, and the population fears the dry season, which has become unpredictable both in intensity and duration. The communities of Nampula province, who live mainly from agriculture and local resources, are far from being the cause of this climate emergency, yet they are already suffering the consequences. Indeed, the changing weather patterns have a direct impact on access to clean water, which increases the incidence of diseases transmitted by vectors (like mosquitoes), such as schistosomiasis, lymphatic filariasis or scabies. These diseases are rarely life-threatening, but they have a serious impact on the quality of life of patients and their families. Since 2022, MSF has been present in Nampula province, responding to the health consequences of the climate crisis. The teams work closely with the Ministry of Health in all their activities such as prevention, diagnosis and treatment. They are carrying out health promotion activities with the communities, consultations in several remote health centers and distributions of medical supplies. Since July, they have also been running a surgery project for patients suffering from hydrocele, a consequence of filariasis which causes the testicles to enlarge significantly. Through these different aspects of the project, patients are truly considered as partners and communities play an essential role in the implementation of all these activities.
