Kasai Diary

Jean-Pierre Amigo is emergency coordinator with Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) in the Kasai region of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Since July, MSF mobile teams have been visiting rural areas around Tshikapa city. The violence has diminished, but the consequences of a crisis that has left hundreds of thousands of people displaced and thousands dead are still evident.
This is a diary of some exploratory actions taken. The medical teams arrive in villages, sometimes for the first time, to treat patients —mainly malnourished children—, and to supply the crumbling local health centres with medicines. There is little or no humanitarian assistance in these areas.
