Field Notes: The role of MSF communications in conflicts

For MSF the ability to develop and share communications materials from the spaces we are carrying out interventions from is at the core of our work as an organisation, allowing us to hold those in power to account and document and share the experiences of patients around the world. This need for communications from the field needs to be balanced out with the need to protect patients and communities and nowhere is this more apparent than in conflict settings where communications teams have to ensure that they help show the realities on the ground while at the same time assessing the impact a communication may have. Claire Hawkridge was working in Ukraine as an FCM when conflict broke out between Ukraine and Russia. She details the decisions the communications teams have to take when working with media and how the situation on the ground influences the communications teams ability to provide the world with information.
