Psychlogical Effects of the Ukrainian War

The conflict in eastern Ukraine has had a devastating impact on people living on both sides of the frontline. Many have lost loved ones and seen their homes and schools hit by shells. Their way of life has changed dramatically; they live in fear of renewed clashes, and face acute stress about their future. Psychological trauma is pervasive among both IDPs and people who remain at the frontline. People have lost their families and livelihood, communities have been ripped apart, and those trapped at the frontline live with the constant threat of shelling. Mental health conditions such as post-traumatic stress syndrome, depression and intense anxiety are repeatedly reported by the population. MSF provides direct medical care through mobile clinics for residents and displaced people and has supported around 130 medical facilities with donations of medical supplies and medicines since the beginning of the conflict. Since August 2014, MSF psychologists have been providing mental health support to those affected by the conflict in cities and towns, including individual and group consultations to people affected by the conflict, patients in social facilities, displaced people, as well as medical staff. MSF psychologists have also been running a training programme for local psychologists, social workers and medical staff working throughout the affected region to help improve their skills and avoid burn-out.
