The destruction of the Kakhovka dam in Kherson region, Ukraine, has caused the flooding of the Inhulets river. MSF teams are working in the Mykolaiv and Kherson region to provide medical care, psychological support and the teams are distributing hygiene kits. One of our main activities water supply, as the flooding has contaminated the wells of the villages and towns.
MSF mobile clinic teams have been working in the Kherson, Mykolaiv and Dnipropetrovsk regions prior to the destruction of the dam, providing primary health care and psychological support. In the Kherson region, where the fighting has been ongoing for months, people have been living without proper access to healthcare and most of MSF patients are older people and people with disabilities, such as limited mobility.
In villages of the Kherson and Mykolaiv regions, MSF teams are distributing drinking water, water containers and water tanks, as access to safe drinking water is an issue. MSF health promoters are supporting communities by raising awareness about possible health risks associated with consumption of unsafe water. Furthermore, MSF mobile clinics continue to work and provide primary healthcare, psychological first aid and MSF teams are distributing hygiene kits.
In the Nadezhdivka village of the Kherson region, MSF teams provided medical and psychological assistance to people being evacuated from the flooded areas. Our team also donated water containers, a generator, mattresses, bedding, first-aid kits, light bulbs, hygiene kits according to the list of needs we were given.
In Kherson city, MSF psychologists are supporting evacuated people with psychological first aid and teams are providing medical and hygiene kit donations to medical facilities.
At the same times communities such as the Marhanets city of the Dnipropetrovsk region, are facing water shortages as the wells are emptying quickly. To support, MSF teams evacuated patients from the local hospital to Dnipro city, to ensure continuity of care.
