Overcrowded, dense, dilapidated... the realities of containing COVID-19 in M-east ward- Mumbai’s informal settlements.

As the world grapples with the global pandemic of COVID-19, MSF is concerned for vulnerable groups worldwide. In Govandi-Mankhurd suburb, slum dwellers, residents live with substandard infrastructure; lack of sanitation including toilets, waste management and a lack of clean water, clean air and extreme overcrowding put them at a very high risk to infections
Misinformation and stigma can increase mental and physical harm as well as targeted violence towards patients. With health promotion team, MSF scaled-up education, prevention and awareness messages in communities through media, mass public announcements, and targeted text messages, during clinical consultations, WhatsApp and phone-calls to over 2000 DR-TB patients at outpatient department of Shatabdi hospital, MSF Independent clinic and TB patients at Sewri in south Mumbai. Through various innovative ways, the MSF clinic in Mumbai continues to guarantee uninterrupted treatment.
With the primary objective of reducing the mortality and morbidity due to COVID-19 pandemic in M-east ward of Mumbai, MSF is supported Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) in improving the capacity for management of mild to moderate COVID-19 cases at facility level (100 bedded Designated COVID-19 Health centre at Shatabdi hospital), health promotion and disease prevention activities, and strengthening Infection prevention and control. The activities targeted about 400,000 people living in the informal settlement population in M-east ward.
