Chasing a pandemic: caring for the most vulnerable during the COVID-19 emergency in Brazil

During the last one year and a half, MSF undertook a significant emergency COVID-19 intervention in Brazil, one of the countries who were most affected by the pandemic. Since the scale of the needs was enormous, MSF kept a flexible approach in order to mobilize teams where they were most needed and trying to optimize the use of scarce material and human resources. In different periods, MSF set up activities in 12 states, providing COVID-19 care in all levels of medical care, mental health support for patients and medical staff, trainings to enhance protocols and patient flows and palliative care. There was also a big emphasis on community engagement, with health promotion activities and diagnostics. In September 2021, and after seeing a decline in the number of cases around the country, MSF decided to end its COVID-19 activities in Brazil while keeping a monitoring capacity for the future.
