The COVID-19 pandemic has so far not hit the area severely, but it has added an extra burden on the people of Marawi. During the period of the community lockdown, medical consultations at health facilities were suspended. The lack of access to clean drinking water made following the recommendations to contain the spread of the virus impossible. Pre-existing conditions of the patients suffering from non-communicable diseases such as hypertension or diabetes made them especially vulnerable to an infection. The team carried out home visits to ensure patients continued to receive their medication and also handed out a leaflet on the virus and on how to protect themselves and their families. At the moment, numbers of infection are still low, but this could change at any time.
