COVID-19 in Northwest SYRIA - More complexity to an already catastrophic situation

The first case of COVID-19 in Syria was officially declared on March 22nd, 2020. So far, no confirmed cases have been reported in Northwest Syria, but if the virus spread in that region, this would add another layer of complexity to a situation that is already catastrophic. Indeed, despite a ceasefire, signed at the beginning of March, which put a temporary halt to the intense fighting in Idlib, the humanitarian situation there remains alarming. Almost a million people have been displaced by the offensive carried out by the Government of Syria and its allies since December 2019 and most of these IDPs still live in overcrowded spaces and unhygienic settings. A high number of medical facilities have also been put out of service. So, even if COVID-19 hasn’t yet spread in northwest Syria, people are already faced with a series of unanswered questions and impossible choices. Indeed, most recommendations for protecting people against the virus and slowing down its spread simply cannot be implemented in Idlib. The decision that MSF has taken is to keep its activities running but we are also adapting our activities and trying to act responsibly in the face of a potential spread of COVID-19.
