Decentralized model of care in areas affected by violence in Cameroon

In the past four years, the Northwest and Southwest regions of Cameroon have been rocked by violence between government security forces and non-state armed groups that has forced more than 700,000 people to flee their homes. Displaced communities face difficulties accessing basic services, including healthcare. Given the high level of insecurity, it is challenging for MSF to reach displaced communities, who often hide in the bush for their safety.

To provide medical aid in such challenging conditions, we set up a decentralized model of care which is delivered directly in the community, by the community. MSF has trained volunteers, who have been selected by community leaders, to detect and treat simple diseases, and to refer patients to MSF-supported healthcare facilities if a treatment is outside their abilities.
