MSF Trauma Care Center in Bunia, Ituri Province

In response to the dire healthcare needs in the province of Ituri, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) initiated a comprehensive medical project to provide critical access to surgical care for victims of the recurring cycles of violence affecting the region.
MSF's project, operational since June 2023, offers trauma surgery and post-operative care at Salama Hospital, a semi-public facility located in the town of Bunia. With a total capacity of 45 beds, the hospital serves as a crucial healthcare hub for the population affected by protracted conflict.
Between June and December 2023, the teams of the project treated 863 patients and conducted 838 surgical interventions. This initiative has played a pivotal role in saving lives, while offering tailored and quality care to reduce the level of functional disability that patients might have faced for the rest of their lives otherwise.
MSF's Trauma and Orthopaedic Care Centre not only provides complex trauma surgery; its medical services also comprise the treatment of burn cases and post-trauma care, such as physiotherapy and mental health consultations. The treatment of road accident victims is also included due to the high prevalence of these kind of injured and the lack of adequate specialist care in the province.

To strengthen the local healthcare infrastructure and improve the quality of care, MSF also invests in the training of medical personnel, improving the quality of biomedical equipment, supporting the referral system, donating medical equipment, and constructing health infrastructures. MSF's support also extends to the General Reference Hospital of Bunia.

To date, more than 1.63 million people in Ituri have been forced to flee their homes live in displacement, constituting one-third of the entire population.
