MSF teams have supported the internal medicine department at the Centre Hospitalo-Universitaire Communautaire (CHUC) in Bangui since 2019 and the maternity and neonatology services since 2022. In 2025 alone, our teams supported 14,316 baby deliveries, performed 1,695 surgical interventions, and carried out 29.756 consultations for chronic diseases. We also contributed to improving the infrastructure and training of healthcare staff over the years.

In August 2026, the MSF support to the maternity department come to an end. MSF is willing to continue and increase his support to some maternal activities at other levels of the health pyramid with the aim to contribute to improve the quality of care for women and babies.

Despite governmental efforts and recent years improvement, maternal and infant mortality in Central African Republic is among the highest in the world. The estimated maternal mortality ratio is 692 deaths per 100,000 live births (2023). The lack of functional structures and qualified staff in the country, particularly outside of the capital Bangui, has a huge impact on women’s access to care. Insecurity and poverty also increase the barriers in accessing healthcare.

The support to CHUC has been key in Bangui, the hospital is a reference for the treatment of HIV and tuberculosis as well as for the maternal and neonatal services. This is a portrait of the hospital and a way to recall the important support MSF has provided and will keep providing to the people in Central African Republic.
