A conflict in Sudan erupted in April 2023 has killed hundreds of people, driven more than 200,000 to flee across the borders and displaced hundreds of thousands inside the country where many already relied on aid before fighting began. More and more people continue to leave, taking dangerous and long journeys to the neighbouring countries (Chad, South Sudan, Ethiopia…) as the humanitarian situation worsens. As of mid-June 2023, according to UN, over 113,000 were registered crossing to South Sudan from various points. The Government of South Sudan with the support of the humanitarian partners, has established transit centres to accommodate the returnees or refugees before their onward movement. Most of the people are South Sudanese and arriving at the border, exhausted and very vulnerable. Some are able to pay transport fees themselves or get help to move to the places of their origin in South Sudan, while others are stranded waiting for help to survive and for their onward movements. Renk in Upper Nile state that has received about 85,000 individuals is one the place identified and hosting most of the returnees or refugees before their transfer to other places in South Sudan. The second busiest entry point is Aweil in Northern Bahr El Ghazal that has registered close to 10,000 people crossing the border from Sudan. Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), through its teams in South Sudan, has started emergency responses with two mobile clinics in Renk and one in Aweil. In Renk which is the main transit point, our teams have been treating water to ensure safe drinking water to the displaced families; alongside malnutrition screening and setting up measles isolation ward. Thousands of people transiting in Renk and Aweil require essentials services like healthcare, access to clean water and sanitation infrastructures, food and non-food items, protection, shelter, etc.
