Measles amongst returnees from Sudan

Conflict erupted in Sudan in April 2023 has killed thousands of people, and more than 2.8 million people have been displaced, including over 2.2 million internally, according to the International Organization for Migration. Out of over half a million who fled across the borders, over 200,000 people were registered crossing to South Sudan from various points as of first week of August 2023. Most of them crossing the border are South Sudanese, arriving exhausted and extremely vulnerable. They are either spread across the country struggling to integrate themselves to the community or at the transit centres close to the border, in both cases requiring essential services such as healthcare, access to clean water and sanitation infrastructure, food and non-food items, protection, and shelter. Moreover, there has been rising cases of measles, a highly contagious disease, amongst returnees especially children at various parts of South Sudan. MSF teams are seeing an influx of measles patients, most of them returnees from Sudan, in its facilities in Unity, Upper Nile, Warrap and Northern Bahr El Ghazal states.
