MSF responds in South Kivu as thousands of displaced people arrive

Over the last year, intensified conflict in North Kivu, in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), has forced about one million people to flee their homes. People have taken refuge in various places across this province, particularly in the outskirts of Goma. Since early 2023, more than 80,000 have arrived in South Kivu, to places like the towns of Minova and Numbi, where Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) teams launched an emergency response at the end of March. MSF teams had already been present in Minova since December 2022 to respond to an epidemic of cholera, an endemic disease in South Kivu. While cholera cases had stabilized at the end of February, following the arrival of the influx of displaced people, there were new upsurges of cases. Almost at the same time, there was an explosion in measles cases. MSF's activities in this emergency response now focus on the identification, referal and admission of measles cases, providing pediatric care to children up to 15 years of age, including those with severe acute malnutrition.
