Last year our team observed a spike in scabies cases in our outpatient department. It was the highest in three years. In the first months of 2022, the number of patients was growing in such a way that our team ran out of medical stock and had to resort to providing treatment only to people who came with serious symptoms. In our outpatient department, 30% of patients were treated for skin diseases; among them 80-90% were suffering from scabies. After doing an assessment of the situation, MSF established a dedicated scabies treatment center in Jamtoli. Due to the increased number of patients, our team became overwhelmed and had to ask patients to reschedule visits or to go to other facilities. Under these circumstances, our medical team in Jamtoli and Hakimpara decided that from February 01, 2023 onwards we would only receive patients from camp 14 & camp 15 and would be redirecting patients from other camp areas to health facilities closer to their shelters. We are now calling on other health actors to take their responsibilities so that Rohingya refugees can visit their nearby primary healthcare centers and seek treatment for scabies and highlighting our concerns about the possible impact of further funding cuts.
