The critical needs of displaced people in South Sudan

As the war in Sudan approaches 1,000 days with no sign of respite, the Abyei Special Administration Area, a territory disputed for many years between Sudan and South Sudan, has become an improvised escape route. Every week, thousands of Sudanese arrive by foot at health facilities that were not designed to receive such a massive influx of displaced persons.
Further south, in Mayen Abun, displacement has taken a different form but is no less urgent. Here, it is long-standing conflicts – cattle theft, tensions over land use, inter-communal violence, climate shocks – that have uprooted families time and again.
All these difficulties are exacerbated by a wider health crisis: in South Sudan, more than 80% of essential health services are run by NGOs, and many of them are now closing their doors after massive cuts in international aid or others that got impacted because of the violent attacks.
On the ground, MSF runs hospitals and health centres and continues to provide essential medical care to the population. Teams carry out vaccination campaigns, provide maternal and paediatric care, offer emergency services and perform surgery.
