Recent political events in Burkina Faso’s capital Ouagadougo have suddenly prompted the country to international headlines. However, it is in an almost general indifference that Burkina Faso, plagued since 2018 by violent clashes in the Sahel which have caused the internal displacement of over 1.5 million people (CONASUR Sept. 2022), has become the epicenter of multiple humanitarian and displacement crises.

In Kaya, a town of 55,000 inhabitants just out north from the capital Ouagadougou, increasing insecurity and violence since last December have prompted hundreds of people to flee their villages - including the village of Foubé, where last November a healthcare center supported by Médecins Sans Frontières was burnt down on the sidelines of an attack on the nearby gendarmerie building - to find refuge in the regional stadium. The sports ground has become an open-air camp, where people sleep out unsheltered and are exposed to respiratory and diarrheal diseases and malaria. MSF provides medical and humanitarian assistance with a mobile clinic and NFI kits distributions, alerts in particular to the issue of the lack of shelter for these displaced populations.
