Kalémie is a town in Tanganyika Province in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Intercommunal violence forced hundreds of thousands of people from their homes a year ago, and in July 2017 people living in settlements around Kalémie were forced to move once again when fighting broke out. Moni and Mukuku settlements are empty, as the internally displaced have been forced to move. The situation remains volatile, but at the moment people have found refuge in and around Kalémie town and many are living in overcrowded settlements. Some are living in the compounds of local schools: Moni Primary School, Filtisaf school, Odari school and Lubuye school. The villages around Kalémie have also been heavily affected by the violence and local people have been displaced. Lukwangulo village was set alight during fighting and all the houses are burned and the local health centre was looted. In many of the sites for the displaced MSF is running mobile clinics and is providing primary healthcare, mental health consultations and nutritional screening and treatment. In July 2017, MSF teams were seeing over 1,000 patients per week. Access to water in the settlements is also inadequate and people are mainly dependent on water trucking. MSF is providing between 130,000 and 160,000 litres every day. In July, MSF provided a total of 3.2 million litres of clean water but that quantity is still far below the average of 10 litres per day per person.
