Growing medical humanitarian needs in Renk, Upper Nile

The fighting in Sudan starting in April 2023 has caused a regional humanitarian crisis. Fleeing the conflict, around 285,000 individuals have entered to South Sudan. Ninety-one per cent of them are South Sudanese – who had fled their own country due to violence, economic or other reasons.

Renk, a town in Upper Nile state, has been the busiest entry point to the country as it has received over 290,000 people as the start of October, 80% of all those coming from Sudan. The authorities, with the support of humanitarian groups, has established a transit centre to accommodate the repatriated people for their stay before the onward movements across the country. The transit centre was however soon overwhelmed leading to people settling outside the fence in open fields, and in informal sites in different locations.
