Refugees from Ethiopian Tigray Region - December 2020

In Sudan, MSF is actually working in three locations including the transit camp of Al Hashaba that is meant to remain a buffer zone in case of future large influx. The Al Hashaba camp is currently hosting around 15 000 refugees supposed to be transferred on the site of Um Rakuba. In this second area, 11 000 people are currently in a permanent camp which capacity can be scaled up to 25 000 people. Finally, MSF is also intervening in the Hammdayet transit camp at the Ethiopian border currently hosting around 15 000 people who, again, should be sent to the more permanent camp of Al Tenedba in the near future. Another 150 000 people are reported displaced on the Ethiopian side of the border (Source UN).

In these different camps, MSF’s emergency activities focus on providing medical assistance to wounded and sick, setting up water and sanitation devices for displaced people and fulfilling different logistic needs. The number of consultations provided by MSF medical teams keep increasing since the beginning of December. On Um Rakuba and Al Hashaba sites, the medical organization provided 3 000 consultations on the second week of December (2 500 on the first week). The majority of patients seen by MSF medical staff were suffering from respiratory infection and diarrhea. Meanwhile, logisticians and water and sanitation engineers are supporting the installation of bladders and ramps as needs grow.
