Water crisis in Metche camp for Sudanese refugees and returnees in Chad

As the war broke out in Sudan, some 450,000 people have taken refuge in Chad. People are living in camps in dire conditions, and many of the camps are facing a acute shortage of water. In Metche camp, hosting almost 40,000 refugees, people are facing a daily struggle for clean water, receiving only six liters of water per person daily, far below the recommended 20 liters of water per day per person. Working together with the community, MSF teams are rushing to identify and put in place new and diverse points of water collection and supply to increase the water distribution in the camp.
Without access to enough safe water, people are getting sick from unclean water and are unable to maintain proper hygiene. MSF teams are seeing an increase in skin conditions, such as scabies, dermatitis and rashes, infections such as gastrointestinal infections, and acute watery diarrhea, putting especially malnourished children under five at risk.
