As the rainy season approaches in Chad, hundreds of thousands of displaced people who fled the war in Sudan are still in the east of the country, facing new challenges. Most families have no shelter, no roof to protect them from the rain and heat waves in places like Adre transit camp, which has been a temporary home for more than 180,000 people as per the UN data, majority of them are women and children, for almost a year.

For some of you watching this video, rain may seem like a minor inconvenience, but for refugees in eastern Chad, it means the risk of more health problems. They lack basic life-saving items such as mosquito nets and plastic sheeting to keep them and their children dry and safe from diseases.

MSF cannot ignore these needs.

Our field teams are organizing a mass distribution in Adré transit camp and Aboutengué camp. We distribute plastic sheeting, mosquito nets and soap. For some, these items might seem easy to obtain. However, for people who are displaced, these are essential for survival.

In addition, MSF continues to provide 80% of the water supply for Adre transit camp.


This distribution costs more than 2 million Swiss francs, a budget that MSF would normally use to provide medical care. But these critical needs for plastic sheeting, soap and mosquito nets exist, and MSF has to fill this gap, because other humanitarian partners, including mandated UN agencies, have not covered it.

This raises a critical question: When will the humanitarian scale-up from partners take place to preserve the dignity of these vulnerable people and ensure that they are not forgotten?
