As the Sudan conflict continues to claim thousands of lives, refugees from El Geneina, West Darfur have fled seeking safety in Chad. An estimated 260,000 new Sudanese refugees arrived in eastern Chad in mid-July and the humanitarian situation is at crisis point, with measles, malnutrition, and malaria emerging as major health concerns. Refugees are facing shortages of many essentials including water, sanitation resources, and cooking essentials.

MSF teams are scaling up medical care, nutritional support, and disease prevention measures to address these pressing challenges and prevent future threats such as cholera outbreaks. However, the scale of the needs in Adré requires sustained support from other healthcare organisations and a structured response for displaced populations across the region to avoid a humanitarian catastrophe.


MSF has been supporting Adré hospital, where our teams have treated hundreds of cases of war wounded who escaped from El Geneina, capital of West Darfur, since June 15. This massive influx of wounded has led to a general mobilization to host and treat them in Adré. Space had to be made, tents set up, and reinforcements found to cope with the increased demand for healthcare services. Transit sites are multiplying, and new camps are being set up, like in Arkoum, where we have already begun providing medical care. It's important to note that even before this current round of fighting, there were already some 400,000 Sudanese refugees in Chad, having fled their country over the past two decades. The situation remains highly challenging, and sustained support and aid will be required to meet the needs of those affected by the conflict and displacement in the region. There is a high need for a call to the international community and other NGOs to jump on and support.
