As the Sudan conflict continues to claim thousands of lives, refugees from El Geneina, West Darfur have fled seeking safety in Chad. An estimated 430,000 Sudanese refugees have arrived in eastern Chad and the humanitarian situation is at crisis point, with malaria, dengue, and malnutrition emerging as major health concerns. Refugees are facing shortages of many essentials including food, water, sanitation resources, and basic relief items.



Ourang camp is almost an hour’s drive from Adre town. This camp was built for around 40,000 refugees, but it is overcrowded with up to 80,000 people staying there. This camp is located far from the town, so there were no health facilities available for these refugees. MSF teams have built a hospital in Ourang camp with a capacity of 100 beds, to provide essential medical care. The hospital has also started providing maternity services. There have been six births already even before the official opening of the maternity.



Given the dire health situation, MSF teams had started outpatient consultations in Ourang even before the hospital was opened. It is an MSF priority to highlight the critical humanitarian situation in eastern Chad as we continue to call upon the international community and donors to allocate greater resources for this crisis. Meanwhile, it is also important to highlight how MSF itself has scaled up the response, and so this hospital is a great example to highlight both the urgent needs of Sudanese refugees as well as the MSF efforts to address them.
