Eastern Chad and Darfur: Visit of the MSF International President Christos Christou

For almost a year, MSF teams have deployed an exceptional assistance in Eastern Chad, where about 550,000 Sudanese refugees have moved since the war broke out in Sudan last year. Refugees are living in dire conditions, desperately short of clean water and decent sanitation. Camps are being built for relocations but shelter and basic facilities available in the camps are wholly inadequate to meet the needs of people. New arrivals are coming everyday and are in desperate need of assistance. MSF teams continue to scale up medical care, nutritional support, water and sanitation and disease prevention measures to address these pressing challenges and prevent threats such as the current Hepatitis E spread.

The humanitarian response in this remote area is still inadequate due to a lack of funds and of enough organisations on the ground, which is slowing down the delivery of aid needed to displaced people. MSF has persistently called for an escalation of the humanitarian response, yet commitments fall woefully short and the funding projections for 2024 are not optimistic. Each passing day sees this situation evolve into a deepening humanitarian catastrophe. Sustained attention, dedicated efforts, and increased funding with a medium to long term vision are imperative to address this emergency.

The MSF International President Dr Christos Christou is currently visiting Eastern Chad to bear witness of the situation, bring attention to the Sudanese crisis and its impact on neighboring countries, and will call on the international community to ensure coordination and funding that reflects the severity of the crisis.
