For over a year, more than half a million Sudanese refugees have been languishing in the desert in Chad, with the majority still lacking basic shelter, sanitation, and hygiene. It feels like the emergency never ended, as these people continue to struggle for food and water. MSF teams are providing the largest share of water, healthcare, and sanitation, but without a coordinated international aid response and sufficient humanitarian organizations on the ground, it is impossible to meet the long-term needs of these refugees. In the first year of the current crisis, working with authorities, UNHCR has focused on relocating Sudanese refugees away from the border to safer areas; around 260,000 people have been moved to new sites, and older camps have been extended for new arrivals. Currently, there are still around 160,000 refugees in Adre, awaiting relocation.
