As a result of climate change, the rainy season in Chad has begun with great intensity this year. A heavy rainstorm hit the Koumogo Health District on the night of 28-29 May 2024, causing extensive material and human damage, particularly in the areas of Koumogo, Manda II, Magoumbou and Dorkoli Health Areas.

In response to the collateral damage caused by the stormy rain, the Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) emergency response team (CERT) carried out a two-pronged intervention: referral of two seriously injured people to the Sarh provincial hospital and the donation of a kit of 20 dressings to treat certain minor cases in the health centres, as well as the distribution of NFI kits to the worst affected households in the district of Koumogo canton, Moyen Chari province. A total of 225 households were identified as being in need of assistance, while the heavy rains destroyed 482 houses and left 81 people injured, 6 of them seriously. One case of death was recorded following electrocution by lightning.

The aim of this intervention was to contribute to the survival of homeless households by providing them with NFI kits that could be used to temporarily rebuild the roofs of destroyed houses and other items to protect themselves against the cold, malaria and also to obtain water.

From 15 to 17 June 2024. 225 households received a kit containing plastic sheeting for the temporary reconstruction of damaged roofs, two mosquito nets, two blankets and a plastic can and bucket for water.
