In eastern Sudan, near the Ethiopian border, lies Um Rakuba camp in El Gedaref state. Opened in November 2020, the camp was established to accommodate refugees fleeing the conflict in Tigray, Ethiopia. Since the outbreak of the ongoing war in Sudan in April 2023, the camp has expanded to include refugees and asylum seekers secondarily displaced from Khartoum, Al Jazirah, and other parts of the country, in addition to the original Ethiopian refugee caseload. As of the end of February 2024, according to UNHCR, the camp accommodates 17,300 refugees.

MSF has been actively working in Um Rakuba camp since its inception, providing essential medical services to both refugees and the local Sudanese host communities. Their efforts include comprehensive primary and secondary healthcare, maternal and child health services, Mental health and specialized clinics for diseases like tuberculosis , Karzar, and non-communicable diseases like diabetes . They also respond to medical emergencies and outbreaks, such as Malnutrition, Hepatis .E , cholera and seasonal malaria Furthermore, MSF focuses on treating neglected diseases like kala azar, using advanced medications like Ambisome when other options are unavailable. In addition to clinical services, MSF offers mental health support and engages in capacity building by training local health staff and volunteers to enhance healthcare delivery within the camp.

Amidst the current conflict and the reduction of humanitarian actors as a result of budget cuts, MSF has remained the primary provider of comprehensive Secondary healthcare services, addressing the needs of both refugees and the local Sudanese host communities. Despite facing significant challenges such as medication shortages and supply delays, MSF is pushing hard to continue its activities to supporting those in dire need.
