MSF has been working in Dadaab since 1992 – for more than thirty years. At Dagahaley camp we have been active since 2009. The objective of MSF’s project at Dagahaley is to reduce mortality as well as illness among the refugees living in the camp, including among the inhabitants of host communities.

A combination of an influx of refugees, drought, and flooding has recently led to significant strain on the people of Dadaab as well as on the MSF healthcare facilities in Dagahaley, where the camp is hosting more than twice its intended capacity.  New arrivals are still reported by MSF teams in the outskirts, though the pace seems to have slowed down, however continuous expansion of makeshift shelters in the outskirts shows more are arriving.  According to an assessment conducted by our teams, around 1300 newly arrived people have not been able to register since February this year, meaning they have no access to official assistance dedicated to refugees such as food distribution..

Funding to Dadaab camp has gradually declined despite the compounding humanitarian needs. Meanwhile actors are looking to development plans as a panacea, whilst critical emerg. Level needs remain unmet. WFP cut down its food basket ration again from 60 to 50% in February 2024, and announced it would stop the distribution to unregistered persons in March.  Meaning, refugees in the outskirts are left on their own.
