Impact of violence on the lives of the population in Port-au-Prince (MSF Emergency Centre in Turgeau).

MSF has run an emergency center in Martissant, a poor neighbourhood in the South of the capital Port-au-Prince for 15 years. There had always been violence in Martissant, but what happened in June 2021 was extreme. Thousands of people fled the area and MSF had to close it’s clinic, which happened to literally on the frontline. It was impossible to continue offering medical help there: it was too dangerous for our staff, and many patients couldn’t reach the center anyway.

On year later, MSF is offering medical help to habitants of Martissant from two different structures: one on each side of the frontline, which continues to divide the neighbourhood in two. The violence still rages on and for the people who can’t leave the place, because the lack the resources to move away, life is incredibly difficult.
