In May 2015, MSF established the Pran Men’m clinic in Port-au-Prince to provide comprehensive medical care and psychological support to SGBV survivors. In its over 10 years (and counting) of operation, it has cared for 16,999 survivors, including over 2,300 between January and September 2025. The rising needs for SGBV care reflect a dramatic deterioration in the humanitarian and security context in recent years. In 2024, after years of escalating violence, armed groups united against the government under the alliance Viv Ansanm, which, as of summer 2025, controls 90% of Port-au-Prince. Its attacks on state infrastructure and the community have devastated essential services and triggered mass displacement. Against this backdrop, the Pran Men’m clinic is a vital lifeline for survivors and has expanded its size and capacity twice to meet the growing demand for its services, with a tripling in the number of SGBV patients cared for at the clinic since 2022, amidst an increasingly difficult environment for survivors and service providers, including MSF.
More broadly, violence and insecurity have severely disrupted healthcare access in Port-au-Prince. Medical facilities face critical shortages of supplies, medicine, and staff, with many abandoned or destroyed. In areas outside government control, both state and humanitarian actors struggle to reach affected populations and deliver health services. As of 2025, the Pan American Health Organization reported that 63% of state-run inpatient facilities in the city are either closed, destroyed, or operating at partial capacity. The widespread violence has also triggered mass displacement across Haiti. The International Organization for Migration reported that as of September 2025, over 1.4 million people—12% of the population—are internally displaced, marking an 810% increase since late 2022. Twenty-one percent of displaced people are in Port-au-Prince, 66% of whom live in 97 overcrowded, unsanitary sites—including churches, schools, and vacant land—exposing them to poverty, disease, and violence.
