SGBV at Mbawa Camp in Benue

Dozens of thousands of people are internally displaced in Benue State, North Central Nigeria, due to armed clashes between farmers and herders. A significant proportion of the displaced population live in crowded camps in precarious and unsanitary living conditions with poor access to food, water, basic services, and health. In displacement settings, SGBV is aggravated because of the proximity between people, impoverishment and means of livelihood, and the context of violence.

MSF focusses its activities on supporting survivors of Sexual Gender Based Violence (SGBV) in internal displacement camps in Benue through confidential medical and psychological treatment. To avoid medical complications, MSF teams raise awareness at community level to encourage survivors to seek medical assistance in the 72 hours following the aggression to receive appropriate medical treatment.
Kasia Strek, photographer specialized in women’s rights, visited Mbawa camp and collected pictures and testimonies from SGBV survivors. The pictures and text are aimed at raising awareness about the situation of SGBV in displacement settings and about the physical and psychological challenges faced by survivors.
