Women's health in displacement camps around Goma

In the displacement sites around Goma, which host hundreds of thousands of people, women are especially vulnerable and exposed to all sorts of violence. Often at the head of single parent homes, they must take many responsibilities to provide for the survival of their relatives; they are more exposed to violence when leaving the camp to fetch wood or food; and they face great challenges in maintaining good hygiene, particularly when pregnant or taking care of newborn babies in unsanitary living conditions.

Today, MSF medical teams provide women with free and confidential sexual and reproductive medical and psychological care, and through the treatment of sexually transmitted infections, family planning and termination of pregnancy in Bulengo, Lushagala, and Rusayo. In the camp of Kanyaruchinya, the lack of access to maternal health services and the increasing number of women giving birth in the camp with poor or non-existent assistance pushed MSF teams to provide emergency obstetric and neonatal care.

While the mobilization from humanitarian actors and Congolese authorities is still insufficient to improve women’s living conditions and implement preventive measures, MSF continues to receive dozens of new survivors of sexual violence every day in its clinics.
