MSF Wash emergency response in IDP camps

Over the past year, the resurgence of M23 has led to an upsurge of armed clashes in the province of North Kivu. The violent fighting between the Congolese army, the M23 and other armed groups have forced over one million people to flee their homes since March 2022, causing a humanitarian disaster and exacerbating the already critical humanitarian situation in this province.

In July 2023, it is estimated that around 300 000 displaced people live in crowded camps around the city of Goma in very precarious and unsanitary conditions. Access to water for displaced populations in the camps remain a huge challenge as services to treat and distribute water are almost non-existent, and despite some improvements in terms of water distribution, it is estimated that each person has 5 litres per day, very far from the humanitarian standards set at 15 litres. MSF teams responded through an innovative WASH response: in addition to the water distributed across the different camps through water trucking system, WASH teams installed a big treatment plant in the camp of Bulengo to treat and distribute water from Lake Kivu. The installation of chlorine dosing pumps and a vast network of taps does not only provide safe water to the majority of the more than 55.000 people living in Bulengo, but the network also connects with the camp of Lushagala located few kilometers in the north, and provides other humanitarian partners with clean water for free through water trucking. MSF encourages more partners to get clean water at the station, as there is more quantity available that can be distributed in the camps. In fact, the response from humanitarian actors is not enough to provide population with minimum standards, and more durable solutions such as the construction of water networks aimed at treating and distributing water should be foreseen. MSF WASH activities have also taken place in other camps such as Kanyaruchinya and Rusayo with water trucking, and through assessment work for ground water exploration in Munigi to respond to the emergency and provide populations with clean water, latrines and showers.
