In South Sudan, mental health issues are overshadowed by neglect, poverty, violence, and displacement. With scarce resources and deep-seated stigma, many people face their struggles in silence, enduring a daily battle that goes unseen and unheard.

MSF provides medical care and raises awareness about mental health issues and psychological problems across its projects in South Sudan. In a region prone to conflict and violence, it is vital to offer support to isolated communities suffering from consequences of violence and adversity. 

MSF addresses mental health needs through a comprehensive set of focused initiatives. These include individual and group counselling sessions, as well as focussed counselling for specific groups, such as individuals living with HIV and tuberculosis, survivors of sexual violence, and mothers requiring prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) services. These mental health services are integrated into outpatient departments, ensuring that patients receive not only initial counselling but also thorough follow-up care for continuous support. Patients requiring psychiatric care (medications) are supported and provided in MSF project locations.
