In Kenema district, eastern province of Sierra Leone, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) provides medical care to pregnant women, lactating mothers, and children under the age of five at the MSF Mother and Child Hospital in Hangha and in primary health care facilities across the district. In 2022, play therapy was introduced as part of a comprehensive healthcare approach in the MSF hospital, making it the first MSF project to implement play therapy as a healthcare deliverance component.

Supported by the Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Unit, known as the Nepo Center (meaning "comfort" in the local Mende language), play therapy helps children process emotions, build social skills, and address developmental delays like crawling or bonding. Through ward screenings, the MSF team tailors individual or group sessions to children’s needs, guiding caregivers to foster secure bonds with structured sessions held five times a week nurturing both the physical and mental well-being of children.
