BENUE STATE

In the Nigerian state of Benue, communities of farmers and herders used to live together in relative peace with only occasional quarrels over land for farming and grazing. However, during the last decade, these populations have become embroiled in increasingly many such conflicts that have turned violent. Since January 2018, these conflicts have become more and more frequent and violent, with a large number of villages having suffered armed attacks, with houses looted and burned. The displaced people tell stories of extreme violence and many violent deaths. According to the state government of Benue, these attacks have caused thousands of people in Benue state to flee their villages and settle in safer areas. The ongoing violence prevents them from returning home and keeps them from attending to their farms. They now live in abandoned buildings, exposed to health threats like respiratory tract infections, malaria, and scabies. Many struggle to provide food to their families. In four official settlements around the state, MSF provides medical support to roughly 8,100 displaced people. In addition, the organization provides clean drinking water and builds latrines, showers, and hundreds of shelters in Mbawa camp, one of the sites. Many additional people who have fled their villages are hosted by local communities. Not being registered officially as displaced, this population does not receive aid from the state. While no end to the violent conflict is in sight, additional displacement and increasing food insecurity is to be expected.
