Care for victims of violence in Extreme North region

The Far North region of Cameroon is heavily affected by violence stemming from armed conflict in Nigeria. Violent attacks by the group known as Boko Haram and counter operations by the military, have led to the displacement hundreds of thousands. More than 240.000 people are internally displaced and about 88.000 refugees from Nigeria have sought refuge in Cameroon. The insecurity and population movement have put further strain on an already vulnerable region where food insecurity is recurrent. The health facilities lack staff and resources or have been abandoned altogether due to insecurity. Around 366.000 people have limited access to basic health care and more than 1.5 million people face food insecurity. Since 2015, suicide attacks have become a frequent phenomenon in the area along the border with Nigeria and the mass influx of wounded after attacks add to the pressure on the already weak health infrastructure.

MSF started working in the Far North region in 2015, and now provides emergency surgery for victims of violence, mental health support, as well as paediatric and nutritional care in Kousseri, Maroua and Mora hospitals.
