Sudan: Overcoming life-threatening distances in remote Jebel Marra, Darfur

Darfur has suffered decades of conflict, deeply rooted in political and social inequalities. Clashes between various armed groups never really ceased, also in and around Jebel Marra, which straddles parts of North, Central and South Darfur states. As an active conflict zone, it has been the only place in Darfur to remain inaccessible for humanitarian assistance until very recently.

MSF teams respond to the different acute health needs and help save lives in a place that has long been neglected and where access to healthcare is still very limited. In 2020, our team started providing medical services in the mountainous region of Jebel Marra. In Rokero, which is a government-controlled locality, we provide medical services at a state-run health centre (called a ‘rural hospital’).
