El Geneina West Darfur violence

Darfur has suffered decades of conflict, deeply rooted in political and social inequalities, with fighting over land and access to pastures, resources and water. Recurrent flare ups of conflict, a tense security situation and pre-existing gaps in the health service provision, exacerbate already dire health needs of all communities. Attacks and clashes displaced around 100,000 people in early 2021 who now shelter in hundreds informal gathering sites all over the capital El Geneina. In April, around 200 people were reportedly killed during an attack on Kreinik town, located about 80 kilometres from El Geneina. Within hours the violence had also reached the state capital. Many more people were wounded and displaced, thousands not for the first time. Medical workers were killed inside two hospitals supported by MSF; a pharmacy was looted; and health workers and patients were evacuated, or they fled. As a result, the two main hospitals in Kreinik and El Geneina were closed for days, leaving wounded and sick people in desperate need without access to lifesaving medical care.

Since 2021, MSF is working in El Geneina and surrounding communities, and remotely supports the hospital in Kreinik town to address needs of violence affected and displaced and communities.  We ran a fixed clinic until July 2022 and continue with five mobile clinics. We work with MSF community health workers (CHW’s) equipped with emergency medical kits in five gathering sites. In addition, we are supporting the El Geneina Teaching Hospital’s paediatric ward and nutrition inpatient departments, the emergency room, enhancing the infection prevention and control measures, and water and sanitation services.
