Darfur has suffered decades of conflict, rooted in political and social inequalities. Struggles over land and access to pastures, resources and water are causing instability, violence and displacement. People have lost their homes, their livelihoods and were forced to flee, many multiple times.

Since early 2022, MSF had supported Kreinik hospital with drug donations and incentives to the ministry of health (MoH) hospital staff, that serves a population of around 480,000 people. A brutal attack on Kreinik town, some 60 km east of the capital of West Darfur, in April 2022 the town’s hospital came under attack; two hospital staff and eight patients were killed, and the hospital pharmacy was looted, causing serious damage to health services in the region. Soon after the attacks we restarted mobile clinics to communities in the locality that otherwise do not have access to healthcare. An MSF team returned to Kreinik town in January 2023 to rebuild the hospital. Working fast, they renovated its emergency room, maternity ward and paediatric ward to start treating patients as quickly as possible. Our team is also running mobile clinics going to nomadic communities and villages, who otherwise do not have access to free healthcare or are unable to access the town, and we ensure referrals of patients who require more complex lifesaving medical care to El Geneina hospital.
